Shooter Arrested In Newport


On Wednesday September 2nd at about 3:40 PM, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a shots fired call off of Highway 20 in Newport. Detectives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and officer’s from the Newport Police Department also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The investigation revealed that Newport resident, 27-year old Matthew T. Reel reportedly fired several shots from a handgun into a wooded area. The shots were determined to have been fired in an unsafe direction and came close to people who were located in the immediate area. Reel was taken into custody for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Reckless Endangering and Menacing, then was transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he was lodged on $80,000 bail. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Newport Police Department and Oregon State Police. Hwy 20 was closed for about two hours during the investigation.
